Apple has acquired an Israeli camera-technology company named LinX Computational Imaging Ltd., as reported by Orr Hirschauge and Daisuke Wakabayashi in The Wall Street Journal (article behind paywall). LinX developed a system that uses multiple lenses to achieve SLR-quality photography from a mobile device (more details in this post by Zac Hall on 9to5Mac). Cools stuff.
Interestingly, an Apple patent for such a system was published earlier this month (more in this April 2 post by Mikey Campell on AppleInsider).
Also, it appears that John Gruber's sources where correct. As the The Tech Block notes, John mentioned such a system on a recent podcast:
The specific thing I heard is that next years camera might be the biggest camera jump ever. I don’t even know what sense this makes, but I’ve heard that it’s some kind of weird two-lens system where the back camera uses two lenses and it somehow takes it up into DSLR quality imagery.
